About The Artwork

Hat & Pera- Second Time Production The Series sold in 1998. If you wish, the artist can once again paint a similar hat for you. Hat & Pera: Installation, 35 hats, mixed technique on hats. Taksim is an old and big neighborhood of Istanbul in Turkey . The people of Istanbul prefers Taksim especially for traveling, having fun, eating, shopping and participating in artistic and cultural activities. ''Pera '' is the old name of Taksim. Pera has changed dramatically in the last 80 years. Because of their kindness, people living in Istanbul used to wear their hats on their way to Pera in old times. They would go there in their most elegant clothes. For this reason, she thinks the hat is a symbol of "kindness and respect" for the people of old Istanbul. Hats hang from the ceilining .This hat's views still make you feel you're walking in that area with the old Istanbuliteses. Even if Istanbul residents disappear one by one, with their artworks, lives and the values left by their, courtesy and cultural wealth they slowly took off their hats to us and greeted us. She thinks especially the old Istanbulites miss the old Istanbul very much. She observed the differences between the old Pera and the new Taksim neighborhood. She reconciled with the moments she lived in the Taksim neighborhood and her previous 'instant' conceptual art works . She referring to old Pera photographs, engravings and new Taksim photographs showing their new lives, she painted imaginary and realistic old and new images on hats. She used the collage technique and asamblage, and oil. She used oil, old and new photos and different techniques. In 2007 she recontructioned this installation for the movie "Fog and Night" by Turgut Yasalar adapted from Ahmet Ümit's book. İt has been exhibited in Artshop İstanbul (2003-2004). It was organized and exhibited, as a joint installation with Fatih Sungurtekin, Strategies No: Spaces & Form Exhibition, Curator Marcus Graf (2004) , Siemens Art Gallery/İstanbul. While famous Athena group sing their song ''For Real'' on 49 international Eurovision song contest ''Infinite Art'' named the hat which was worn by the group member Hakan Özoğuz was made by Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin in 2004. The hats were sold to art collections in many countries of the world.
