About The Artwork

The main painting installation that I am submitting here is titled Memories, and it was created in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is thought of as a painting that is a project itself. It is a large-scale piece: 160x220cm. Its surface materiality combines different sources in an inventive way. For example, there is the use of embroidery on a wire, small plastic and rubber tubes, dyed silicone, concrete, gold leaf, tulle, and dyed wool hemmed with thread, and what is most specific about it is the LED lighting with a motion sensor. The lighting is located in the central part of the image in the area of the lungs of the central figure and turns on automatically when the observer is in front of the image. The picture consists of figures whose connections are layered puzzles: they are operational on several levels and they are looking for an active and educated observer. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic compounds anticipate one of the possible fantasy worlds. The bearer of the image is a figure of a creature whose torso is made of transparent glass, the body is made of silicone material, and there is a fishtail in the place of the extremities. The LED light illuminates the place where the lungs and the heart are, which are otherwise the signifiers of emotions and life as the main characteristics of the human. The lights also have the function of emphasizing the embroidery on the wire as a media procedure. Transparency and illuminance are largely present in the figures.

The richness of reality, civilization’s knowledge, and personal drama summarize into the symbols that are always new, and always exciting, if the artist holds on to the original principles. No story is told to the end because it is in constant development and movement, and because of that art can never be spent. Technological development which is put to the service of ideas is the means for bringing the symbol closer to reality in a new, more powerful way. Technology is in the service of art and ideas, not the artist as a slave to technology. The artist is the illuminator of his own cathartic experience that occurs as a result of the creative act. Immersed in the core of the world, where the dualisms – happiness, joy, and pain meet the artist is the herald of knowing the secrets of being. In my work, I strive to follow the rhythm of internal pulsation devoid of external demands and pressures by which cultural opinion seeks to reshape the creator. Social engagement, attitude toward reality, and contemporaneity are a priori contained in the sublimated images. No need to stream them into textuality or explicitness as this alienates and distances art from the audience and the artists from the conceptual sources. The developmental phase of my art ranged from reviewing corporeality through symbolic-expressive figuration to being then purified by an abstract sign that speaks with the strength of its coloristic or formal effect. In the current creative phase of a film sequence or ambient architecture, I transposed into the medium of painting using the principles of extended media in order to discover new challenges of the picture. Streaming the picture into motion, video, or vice versa, by regressing the moving image of film into traditional art media, new formal and coloristic values are established which, borrowed from another medium, acquire entirely new force and meaning. Milica Raicevic was born on April 29th, 1974 in Belgrade. She graduated from Painting Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts ( FFA) in Belgrade and she earned a master’s degree from the same faculty ( 2002). She is currently in the Ph.D. program at the Faculty of Contemporary Arts (FSU) in Belgrade.
