Hillary Rowland, businesswoman and Internet Entrepreneur. I wanted to celebrate women as capable leaders, as being both strong and beautiful, intelligent and colourful. We often celebrate men for being these things. I love oils as they can lock in colors for generations, and thereby create a "timeless" work of art. I wanted to remove the superficial layers of modern artifice, to highlight the essential human characteristics -which are "timeless" I've used black as my base color often, and I'm also very fond of using white, it has the same effect in forcing the colors to leap off the canvas, but naturally white has a "softer" effect. What I like most about this image is that although it is "feminine" it is also very strong -in spite of the medium, and I think it also achieves a classical/Roman/Greek look. Of course, the ancient word forms the roots of our modern culture around the world -no less in America, and I like the fact that it conveys the idea of America as being the "modern Rome" ~with all that is positive and negative about that idea. I like the minimalism of this piece, all of the extraneous elements have been washed away, leaving only the essential qualities of character and beauty which make it a pleasure for the eye, and a peaceful meditation on feminine beauty, as such is a source of peaceful reflection that will endure and give joy to many.
