About The Artwork

As a Los Angeles native, Amoeba Music on Sunset was very much apart of my coming of age. My first album I bought, my first Criterion DVD and even my first date. After I heard they were closing, I ventured out to get one last photo of the ICONIC neon sign but when I arrived all that was left was a dusty/burnt crime scene outline of what was once a magnificent landmark that meant so much to me as a youth. I decide to take a Polaroid and held on to it for several weeks before it dawned on me. Why don't I bring back the neon!?! So I took a needle and thread and began embroidering the neon back onto Amoeba Music. I hope this piece bring feelings of nostalgia and joy. Polaroids are just an incredible artifact of a moment i time that can never be relived but always be remembered.

Bret Watkins is a Los Angeles based Polaroid photographer. Bret is drawn to spaces, faces and neon places. Polaroid has become Bret’s medium of choice because they find there is something about being able to capture a moment in time and see it develop in your hand minutes later that is truly special. Polaroid has such a dreamy quality to it, so my goal is to always create a world that feels real yet surreal. I want them to be a place you've never been but always wanted to see.
