This is a portrait of a young woman sleeping. It's evocative of peace and tranquillity. I wanted it to capture the moment before a girl becomes a woman -she is on the cusp of adulthood and all of life's possibilities are all open to her. Presumably, she is dreaming about the life that she will lead. It's not often that people are depicted sleeping, and yet it takes up so much of our lives. It is our dream life that is the central reality of our lives. It is unavoidable -and yet paradoxically it is an escape from the mundane nature of much of life. In his brilliant book "The Magical Child" Joseph Chilton Pierce talking about a university study that was conducted with the students in the sixties. They were thorough a range of devices (including LSD, meditation, and prayer) led into a deep sleep together. They were coupled together -with people who were essentially strangers. In sleep laboratories, they slept together (there was no sexual activity in the experiment). They found the couples (who had previously had no relationship) often fell in love after they started literally sharing the same dreams. They could after some time enter into the same lucid dream together, and share the same conscious dreams that lucid dreamers report -together. Still more amazing was that they were able to create their world's together co-creators in the same drama -at the same time. Not only that, but they could also return to the same "world" that they had created together night after night. When I was 18 I told a friend that I thought that technology really only re-invents the capacities that we have that are lying dormant in court minds ~waiting to be rediscovered and re-ignited. I hope one day to experience this wonderful capacity.
