About The Artwork

The lindworm (worm meaning snake), also spelled lindwyrm or lindwurm, is a mythical creature in Northern and Central European folklore living deep in the forest that traditionally has the shape of a giant serpent monster. It can be seen as a sort of dragon. According to legend, everything that lies under the lindworm will increase as the lindworm grows, giving rise to tales of dragons that brood over treasures to become richer. Legend tells of two kinds of lindworm, a good one associated with luck, often a cursed prince who has been transformed into another beast, and a bad one, a dangerous man-eater which will attack humans on sight. A lindworm may swallow its own tail, turning itself into a rolling wheel, as a method of pursuing fleeing humans. Yiannis' subject matter is the essence of the world he live in: dystopia. Inevitably, every individual witnesses the devastation of modern society. Instead of paying tribute to nature, we opt in favor of worshiping materialism, forgetting our origin. He sees in his artwork the today’s crisis; He sees a nature that has sunk into the dystopia that human has imposed, remonstrating the contemporary world.

My subject matter is the essence of the world I live in: dystopia. Inevitably, every individual witnesses the devastation of modern society. Instead of paying tribute to nature, we opt in favor of worshiping materialism, forgetting our origin. I see in my artwork the today’s crisis; I see a nature that has sunk into the dystopia that human has imposed, remonstrating the contemporary world. A piece of art owes a social concern to its viewers, evolving each and every one of them personally. Man needs to be in contact with the equilibrium of nature, and that is why my landscapes form an uncomfortable notion to the viewer. And it is exactly this, the disarray of dystopia that sows doubt about the lost unification between human and the environment. Yiannis Devoidness Kalyvis
