About The Artwork

Collage of vintage paper and acrylic paint. The paper includes layers from the early 20th century, music from the 1950s with knitting patterns and ephemera from the 1960s. The floral border is formed from roughly cut wallpaper from the early 20th century. There is a strong uplifting feel in the dynamic composition with naive shapes and joyous colour harmonies. The picture shows you can make your mark bold and strong when you are unapologetically yourself. The collage has been created on a cradled wood panel treated to archival standards to preserve the work. The wood has been sealed with Golden GAC 100, the paper coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the collage given two final layers of protection with Golden UV matte varnish. The collage wraps over the sides of the wood panel and requires no frame. The picture has been wired and is ready to hang. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
