About The Artwork

I visited Svalbard, in arctic Norway, in the summer of 2013 and came away with vivid memories of the walk on the Longyearbyen Glacier, and a whole host of photographs just asking to be converted into artworks. Here texture medium was gradually built up onto a handmade prepared canvas and overpainted with heavy body acrylic to convey a sense of what it was like to stand on and next to that immense, moving force of nature. Cold and pristine whilst at the same time dirty and abrasive. This work is one of a collection of 6, all being inspired by the same 50m stretch of the glacier's edge. This work, along with three others (78.1, 78.4 and 78.5) were exhibited at the 5th Base Gallery in East London during the first week of November 2017. The names given to the pieces reflect the latitude of the glacier – 78° North

Matthew has been painting for over 10 years, originally inspired to capture his experiences walking in wild and remote places in a more meaningful way. He travels extensively in the UK and the Nordic regions in the search for subject matter, focussing on the intricate patterns and relationships in the landscape and the influence of natural processes, especially the effects of water and ice. Matthew’s sculptured mixed media abstracts often start with a quite small detail from the landscape, letting the shapes and patterns evolve on the canvas into paintings rich in texture and blended colour. With a Maths degree as background and interests in geology and physical geography, all of these influences can be seen in Matthew’s work. Matthew also works and tutors in watercolour. Matthew has exhibited in group shows in London and Essex, and later this year will hold his first solo London exhibition “RESIDUE”, featuring a number of his larger abstract pieces, inspired by what nature has left behind.
