This piece is a portrait, a self-portrait, and a still life... The flower (an asiatic lily) was once a living organism, and it lived out its final days in our apartment studio. It was painted from direct observation; now it lives on in this painting, in this vase. The three-faced vase gets its form from the texture of the white paint, sculpted with brushstrokes. The shadows of the paint describe the features of the faces. I believe this alludes to my interest in our many different selves, and in my personal experiences with shifts in identity and perspective... I think a lot about our multiple selves and the performances they put on. I think about mental power and the realities we build. About female hormonal cycles and the elasticity of the imagination. I also think: why do flowers exist? What purpose do they serve? I think, to grow and attract, to copy their DNA. Same as any living thing. (This work is one that is particularly strong in person compared to in photo format - it is a peaceful and subtle piece with a variety of textures and a faded, vintage look that makes me want to go on a solo meditation retreat at an old beach house. It'd look perfect in a simple, white frame on a white, cool blue, mint green or pink wall.)

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experiments in semi-abstraction and sumi-e painting methods and philosophy. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
