This piece is built of the dream of travel to faraway places. The colours, the sights, the smells. The spirit of freedom. It's more the 'idea' of travel rather than the reality, and what it represents. I've tried to capture the unselfconscious quality of 'folk art'. A certain naiveté if you will. I hope viewers will find little tongue in cheek easter eggs and jokes hidden here and there. The fish is speaking in tongues, perhaps a speaker of Hebrew will be able to translate. This is based on a supposedly true event in a Jamaican fish stall whereon gutted piece of produce sprung to life and began to preach the end of days. I chose acrylic and spray paint on chipboard because it was cheap, the colours were bold, and I wanted to emulate that feel of folk, or outsider and graffiti art, using whatever mediums are / were available to hand. The works in this series are also inspired by the street and graffiti art of 1980’s New York and contemporary London as well as teh folk art of Mexico City, Port-au-Prince, Trench-town and other cities. I am inspired by well known graffiti, street and mural artists such as Jean Michel Basqiat, Kieth Haring, Banksy, Diego Rivera and Grayson Perry as well as little or unknown folk and ‘outsider’ artists from around the world, including Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Mexico, India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and many others. The style is intensionally naive and a little rough around the edges. I build up the image in layers of acrylic, often scribbling letters and images with a marker pen. This is often inspired my music from a certain part of the world which I am listening to while painting - the lyrics will often find their way into the painting. I also scrawl a lot of religious or cultural or folkloric images and patterns and symbols. Religious, philosophical concepts or iconography from a part of the world i have visited or long to visit. These will often be mixed with the trappings of material culture or consumer culture which I will mix in with these older, ‘folk’ or religion-cultural elements and symbols. I will often intentionally paint over something I have already laid down, to create a texture. Thus these works are rarely planned and never finished, but part of an on-going ‘process’.
