About The Artwork

Route 66, "the Mother Road" stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica, and dates back to the late 1920s. Some may argue that its heyday was found in the post-World War II years, particularly the 1950s. The highway covers a distance of 2,448 miles with the middle section found in New Mexico. In the eastern New Mexico town of Tucumcari, there is a treasure chest collection of the kinds of motorcourts and motels which served an important role in offering a night of rest after a long day behind the wheel. The Blue Swallow Motel sign is still a brilliant billboard that lists the attractions one might look for after those hours of driving: "100% Refrigerated Air" (don't settle for less) and a TV. If the "Vacancy" sign is lit at night, you'll probably want to pull in. If you aren't lucky enough to be there, perhaps you'll enjoy hanging this painting within eyesight to feed your sense of wanderlust and joy of travel as you plan your next trip. The acrylic painting covers a 12" x 12" cribbed wood panel. The 1 1/2" side returns are painted `black. The painting does not require a frame. It can be hung without. You'll find that the depth and black paint do a nice job of showcasing the work on your wall or shelf. The work includes installed hanging hardware.

Barry reports that his earliest memories are of drawing. Paint followed only a few years later. Eventually the enjoyment of producing art in two dimensions melded with other academic strengths to led to a profession in architecture where design was pushed into the third dimension. Even then, the process of creating a building relied on sketches, drawings, and renderings. After growing up in South Arkansas, getting his degree and beginning his profession in Houston, Barry and his family relocated to North Carolina for 27 years. in 1983, the elastic snapped and they are back in Houston where Barry oversaw construction and helped plan for facilities at one of the country's largest community colleges until his retirement in September 2023. Beyond work, Barry has always enjoyed travel and his paintings reflect images that have caught his imagination along the way. While the paintings are based on reality, Barry's work makes countless additions and adjustments to better convey both reality and spirit of the subjects. Post-retirement, Barry is excited to be able to spend much more time traveling and producing new paintings.
