About The Artwork

The Quilted Landscape paintings were initially inspired by a formal interest in pattern, and in this case, the intricate and diverse patterns found in quilting. I have a great respect for this craft that both my mother and grandmother practiced. Bringing quilted imagery into the landscape provided endless opportunity to play with color relationships and the compositional element of inserting geometric shapes into an otherwise organic environment. What emerged were these surrealist paintings that transformed the landscape into something new. The draping of a blanket over something is an act of domesticity. These paintings speak of our influence on the landscape, how we domesticate nature by transforming wild, hostile places into comfortable spaces to live, work and play. It is my intention to evoke a sense of magic and curiosity in my paintings through the interplay of man-‐‑made and natural elements.
