About The Artwork

Chumak - in the old days in Ukraine: a peasant engaged in the transportation and sale of salt, fish, bread and other goods. Part of the historical heritage of my people. This is a viable link for me, which helps me personally and my compatriots to self-identify Ukrainian culture in the present and future time. Chumak and his oxen are allegorical comparisons with me and my way in art. The road of Chumak and his oxen is far and long, but nothing will make them turn from their path, no matter how heavy it is. A full cart will always mark the successful mission of Chumak, he has made his journey not in vain. Chumaky symbolize the way of achieving their life purpose.

Honoured painter of Ukraine, native of Lviv Petro Sypniak, belongs to the most famous Ukrainian artists today. For more than thirty-five years his multifaceted creative work has been known to the spectators of numerous group and personal exhibitions in many towns not only in Ukraine, but also in France, Chekh Repuplic, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, where artist's paintings won recognition due to persuasiveness of idea-figurative interpretation and craftsmanship of formal plastic features of true painting execution. The painter was born on January 29, 1959 in Lany village near the ancient Halych in lvano Frankivsk region, and the reminiscences of childhood years, impressions of rich folk art and picturesque nature of Precarpathia, primordial customs and traditions of its inhabitants remain one of the sources of creative inspiration for P.Sypniak, who reconsider all of these from the position of the man of modern epoch. He constantly improves his professionalism obtained during the years of study in Lviv university of applied and decorative art (1980-1985) by means of systematic independent work, invariable interest in the wide range of events of cultural life, in comprehension of the new horizons of world artistic heritage in the most famous museums of Europe. The period of formation of P.Sypniak as an artistic personality with an individual face concurred with important social-political and generally cultural processes on the territory of Eastern Europe. He was the member of the group of initiative young painters, who in those conditions took up the position of antagonism to the ideologized norms in the sphere of culture, which were still propagated in the Soviet Union. One of the manifestations of this active position was the formation of the Painters community Club of Ukrainian Artists on the verge of 1988-1989, which works up till now and which, with the participation of P.Sypniak, initiated a number of resonance ventures, important for securing a new coordinate system in the development of Ukrainian art of the last period. Big present day painting work of the artist witnesses the width of his creative interests, the external manifestation of which is genre many sidedness as well: urban and nature-landscape scenery, thematic and religious-evangelic compositions, portraits, still life, women acts. But more essential is the presence of the main idea which connects works of different genres and attaches to them P.
