About The Artwork

This piece is oil and cold wax on archival gesso panel. Using cold wax mixed with the oil color gives a layered depth to the look and feel. This is the first large piece I've used cold wax and I'm having so much fun with the mark making which, to me adds energy and movement. The subject is from beach walks in a nearly deserted area of St. Helena Island, a quiet sea island perhaps best known for its historic connection to Gullah culture and language still abundant on the island today. The island is filled with many historic and famous sites such as the Penn Center and Chapel of Ease. These low country lands drip with history and I try to use this inspiration to communicate visual harmony and inspire contemplation for the viewer in my landscape paintings.

I spent early years bumbling about some pretty amazing landscapes. Simple summer gardens, pecan groves and running creeks in the Piedmont region of the Carolina's. As a child I adored spending time exploring & funny thing,... I'm getting back around to that mode of exploring. This year I find myself going back to familiar grounds. I've moved from South Carolina low-county's copious creeks & salt marshes to the familiar lush, rolling hills of the Piedmont area of the Carolina's. I will always be influenced and find beauty in the atmospheric conditions of most landscapes. But the exploration is what thrills me. So, it's time for another adventure and sharing what might be found. My main medium is oil because for me it works best to show light and atmosphere with the most tone and range. My usual approach to painting is generally characterized as Tonalism. If you're wondering what Tonalism is, you are not alone. Tonalism isn't as well known as Impressionism, Expressionism, Realism, Abstract or most any other defined art movement. Tonalism emphases color, line and shape without narrative as a way of communicating visual harmony and spirituality. I like to consider myself a lifetime learner and have attended workshops and studied with artists and art teachers I greatly admire. My favorite paint saints are Mark Rothko, Georgia O'Keeffe, John Henry Twachtman, Birge Harrison, Frits Thaulow, and George Inness. I use highest quality materials available. Like Steve Jobs said "Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles."
