About The Artwork

The theme to be portrayed through the piece would be the perception of luxury within animals that are out of their natural habitat. This unparticular piece is the root of my theme. My theme came about by the design of the painting. This painting is the pure representation of how me theme is being portrayed. The canvas relates to the theme because I'm portraying the exotic panther in an environment where you would not normally find it, which in the city of Hong Kong in a setting with an extraordinary, natural, relaxed mood to it. The panther is in the city which is unusual because a panther's natural habitat is the jungle and I have substituted the habitat for the concrete jungle which is the city of Hong Kong. A jungle is wild and hard to live in. Where a concrete jungle is is a city with similar characteristics. The city has large modern buildings that are perceived as dangerous and overwhelming like a jungle. I choose the buildings because I thought it would be very ornate and with my interest in architect it just fits my style. The concrete jungle is where dreams are made of there's nothing you can do. That's where the Cartier box falls in to play it's a mystery but also acts like it could be a new door open, a path, or a dream considering that's where dreams are made of. For me the message and overall piece with the box means you need to look beyond the paint and let us open our mind to a new idea. I added the spot light in the atmosphere of the piece because I feel like in a big city has a lot of light which will inspire you. The piece was inspired by Cartier which is a high-end jewelry company. That relates to the theme Cartier is root of luxury, even the painting carries itself in such a luxurious manor. The panther is a history icon for Cartier, a panther is a register trademark for Cartier and that's how the inspiration took its course. The charismatic creature by turn stands as one of the most powerful symbols of Cartier style and design. A subtitle metaphor for the panther represents to me elegance, free spirited, independence and innocence. From my original sketch I got a vision and I just stuck with it continuing the idea never altering it. I can see it come to life in my mind. I created an image in Photoshop approximately two years ago, and I loved the concept so much I decided I wanted to paint it and I wait for the opportunity with the senior studio class to create this dream and I achieved it. The extensive shade of color with the gold highlights on the box giving it a luxurious vibe and define the piece well, making it unique. The focal point of this piece is the Cartier box. I made the jewelry box the focal point by using build up of layer of paint to a maximum, by using different shades and tones of a cretin pigments. The box is the only thing in color which brings variety to the piece giving it that Kodak moment. The color scheme goes well exceptional in perfect harmony black and white goes the best with red, just like in fashion there also complementary colors. I shaded the sides of the box to give it depth and tone, since the side of the box looks like light hits it in a certain way it sort of looks three dimensional Also I used lighting techniques throughout the piece to show the certain building how devilry they are populated. Using drop shadows to shade in the lights to the darks gives it composition and depth. There is movement across the painting because there are a lot of things going on from buildings to the panther and bringing it back to the Cartier box. If you move a certain way the buildings look three dimension because your eyes are fighting trying to distinguish the building coming forward. I have created a sense of moment because from the focal point the viewer's eyes wonder throughout the painting. There's so much detail in the piece you need to take the time out and admire the detail. I made the buildings more detailed in the center piece of the painting then the left and right side to kind of let the piece fade out in the blackness, giving it that panoramic effect. A technique I used was using multiple shades of pigments for example I did not just used one black I used three different types of black such as bone black, mars black, and carbon black. This is also similar with the color of the box that was multiple tones and shades of red. I believe the different variation of one color makes it so rich in quality, because the there is warm, cool, and neutral shades of each color used. I mixed colors with each other so in one brush stroke there was multiple lines of different colors. I painted the canvas white with a roller to make the canvas smooth, and it really helped. Also a technique I stumbled upon was pointillism. As painting the building a viewer pointed out that it just looks like dots. But the when you take a step back you see an extraordinary sharp buildings. Pointillism is a technique of neo-Impressionist painting using tiny dots, which become blended in the viewer's eye. Once I realized I discovered this technique I expanded it and developed it to my likings. Obstacle I encountered during the process was bringing this huge canvas back and forth from school. At one point during the delivery the painting was laid to rest on the top of the head piece in the car which left a big indent in the piece but I sprayed water on the back of the canvas and it just went right back to normally like magic. another problem was getting the shading just right on the box, because first it was too dark then to light and vice versa. I would not really improve much because that was my vision and I made it come to life, but I might want to use the splatter technique in the background with some gold paint but I'm afraid it would ruin the panoramic effect. Lines have vastly been used in an intricate way in the buildings. It's good that there are straight lines which are very complementary to the smooth curves of the panther. There are things that this paint has and it is an extremely perfect example of unity, harmony, balance, and variety. The paint is perfectly balanced in a way that is not exact to each side to give it vary but I took some elements and expended and contrasted them well keeping the same fell to have perfect harmony. The elements and principles of this piece has been organized well by the shapes and objects used.
