About The Artwork

Charybdis was the daughter of Poseidon. In her father's battle against Zeus she swallowed up land and islands with water. This work is part of a series, "Charybdis in Hawai'i". As a personification of sea-level rise, her appearance in Hawai'i is seen as a second 'contact' (the first being Captain Cook) with something that threatens to disrupt and destabilize. The specifics of this painting are based on another painting, "The Death of Captain Cook" by Zoffany (1795)
