About The Artwork

This painting is one of 17 that was displayed in an exhibition called DEEPER WATERS, October 5 to 30, 2016: an exhibition of watercolours by Rebecca Mason at the La Fab Gallery, 212 Old Chelsea Road, Chelsea, Quebec. “As I drifted into deeper waters I watched the river bottom turn darker, the air felt colder, and I could feel the ghosts of the war surround me. This was not Canada. The rivers have voices and secrets within; when I look into their depths the angst of the past and the power of love surround me. The landscape is jaw-dropping spectacular, but there are still scars from the war a mere 25 years ago. As we paddled the crystal clear waters of the Mrežnica River we were chilled and sobered by the shelled out building on the shore and the DANGER: Land Mines sign on the hillside. The deep waters held voices and secrets and the stark contrast of beauty and melancholy mesmerized me.”
