Reading Robert Graves book 'Goodbye to all that' while coincidently travelling through Flanders, I came across the Commonwealth War Grave which had names of his fallen comrades. The mood of disquiet at this place provoked the making of this work. I work in acrylic because it allows me to experiment, making changes quickly is paramount when wishing to explore my options. I apply the acrylic in successive washes to achieve a soft structure and usually reinforce areas with a more opaque use of the pigments. I use artists hogs hair brushes to apply and manipulate the paint with large 4" brushes to spread the washes and break up the linework. The work is painted on a Superior Studland board as I like the rigidity and fine surface, plus the longevity has a proven record. This work is on a Studland board, no varnish finish is applied because of its absorbency. So the painting should be framed with a mount and under glass. I recommend at least a 60mm wide frame, narrow frames on large paintings do not sit well and have a tendency to warp.

Born in Gloucester and living and working in Cheltenham UK. I like to work in acrylic because it allows me to experiment, making changes quickly is paramount when wishing to explore your options. I suspect like most figurative artists I find drawing and painting the human form wholly embedded with human behaviour. The desire to secure more than a representation of a persons movement, the spilling of light over contours or the various other physical facets is the reason we continue to make paintings. To recast emotions in texture, colour and pattern and to make it still, perhaps this is a measure of a successful painting. I have sold work around the world, to individuals and organisations and have produced award winning public art (usually with a colleague) for various institutions.
