About The Artwork

Goethe wrote, “Music is liquid architecture; Architecture is frozen music.” I am a painter, an architect, and a classical musician (composer, singer, pianist, and organist). This painting is one of a series in which I combine these interests. The underpainting (in orange) is a cross-section of Mont-St-Michel, an island abbey off the coast of Normandy. The text includes a passage in French about the place by Victor Hugo and the caption from the episode of the Bayeux Tapestry that takes place at Mont-St-Michel. The figures evoke the centuries of monks who lived in this extreme place and their patron, the archangel Michael. Across the bottom is an extract from the piano piece, "La cathédrale engloutie," (The Engulfed Cathedral) by composer Clause Debussy, thought to have been inspired by Mont-St-Michel. The piano piece also provides the title of the painting. The canvas is finished on all edges and arrives ready to hang, no framing required.

A native of San Antonio, I recently lived in San Francisco for 18 years and previously lived in New York and Paris. I am deeply committed to city culture both today and through the centuries, especially through the lenses of architecture, music, literature, history, and of course, art. While I appreciate abstraction and distilling to essences, I am more excited by the richness of complex layering and simultaneous meanings.
