About The Artwork

“ In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder there is a secret order ” Carl Jung The painting discourse aims to recontextualise the tradition of landscape painting; adapting it to recent global events – through highlighting the importance of our natural world. The work attempts to investigate landscape painting with a greater geographical spectrum. My research explores issues concerning climate change together with how human geography and its expansion is forcing our planet into a terrifyingly irreversible state. As a concept it can be said to be a considerably difficult one; the artist's role does halt the effects of climate change. Yet hopefully it brings attention to the situation, alongside getting more people to unite and care for what we have. “ I couldn't say that art will solve everything; it won't solve anything. But there has to be a kind of amalgamation of everybody all looking in the same direction. First, you have to convince people that climate change is happening, second, what we can do about it and, finally, how long have we got? ” Max Eastley The paintings intertwine the natural world with the nature of paint, inviting the viewer to into a sense of wonder, to contemplate the beauty and curiosities that lay beyond. However, beneath the aesthetic lies more of an ominous intimation of the worlds shifting situation; touching upon the pressing concern of the age of the anthropocene. “ As the spirit wains the form appears ” Each painting begins as a response to something; an experience of a space or research into a place. Then into the act of painting; a dialogue occurs allowing the material to inform the outcome. This is something further to explore, breaking boundaries and playing with the level of information, allowing invention to proceed where the subject matter departs. Failure is still an outcome. Inspiration comes from many sources, from reading about the contemporary sublime to looking at hybrid painting or more historical references like the Northern Romantics. Ideas come from responding to first-hand experience, documentaries, film, magazines, modern science journals and most importantly, music informs everything and paint itself is fascinating; these all inform and structure the painting discourse.

Martin Clarkson is an early career visual artist based in Nottingham, he is currently working amongst a community of creatives at 'Fishergate Point Studios'. Clarkson graduated from Loughborough University in 2012, since then he has participated in exhibitions extensively across the United Kingdom, alongside collaborating in overseas residencies and international exhibitions. Clarksons recent paintings intertwine the natural world with the nature of paint. These paintings offer the viewer a chance to immerse themselves into an unfamiliar place of wonder and fascination, whilst presenting a moment to pause and be inspired by the reality of our beautiful yet fragile 'One Planet' . Beneath the painted aesthetics, Clarksons' practice echo's a somber tone towards the shifting states of our planet, and how the cost of human intervention is impacting the natural balance of each ecosystem and the flora and fauna within it.
