About The Artwork

Dogs have a faith we can only envy. This one turned up on a dock that emerged into a jewel colored "swampscape." I live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I am surrounded by water,: tidal rivers and black water swamps, all of which is interspersed with overhanging live oak trees, spanish moss, and sparkling reflections. Everyone tries to paint it, because everyone is struck by the beauty of it. This particular painting grew out of an earlier attempt, and as I reworked the sky, it became a wonderful thing. Not wanting to mess with the magic there (because, trust me - it is magic -- I have nothing to do with what God sends off my brushes), I layered in some aerosol in the foreground, in rich jewel tones. But it still had no focal point. And I am old school. A painting needs to draw you in, with something, preferably a couple somethings, but that river was inviting and a little too empty. It sat on my easel for a long time. Months. The good ones can be like that. They either fly onto the canvas in hours or days, or else they need consideration. One day I saw it, the single long dock, sort of lost in the foreground, with that faithful old black lab waiting for the master. When we hung it in the gallery in Beaufort, people started having very lovely reactions to it, and it generated some really great stories. But the best story was the woman who took it home: She came in with her mom and as they talked about it, she cried. But they also thought it was the most hopeful painting they'd ever seen. As a painter, or any other creative person will tell you: it doesn't get any better than that.

Painting was not my first life's work, but it has fed my family for the last 20 years, and I am proud of that. I came to it late, with a lifetime of travel and stories to paint. I worked hard at them, full time all the time and the reward was that people liked my stories -- still do! -- so I kept painting them. They've shown in museums and galleries, sold to cities and corporations, and to thousands of individuals all over the world who loved them and put them in their homes. I consider myself blessed.
