About The Artwork

The word “monstera” in Latin means “monstrous”. It is a powerful plant due to its name and the way it develops. My garden has always had monstera plants, the leaves reach up to one meter and They are robust, persistent vines that grow without limits. I fell in love with this plant over the years, as I observed and got to know it. And I consider it a true work of living art. They are a of proof that Nature is a true Artist. It has a unique shape that captivated me. Each sheet is unique and has your digital print. The holes give the plant a charm and are made randomly by Nature itself. There is a fruit that you can eat and that is delicious. That’s why they call this plant “monstera delicious”. Monstera is also known as Adam's Rib, because it has a shape that looks like a rib and also has the shape of a heart in its natural position. It is a broad, vibrant green plant full of vitality. This tropical aspect gives it a very elegant and exotic look, which really captivated me. But this leaf goes far beyond its tropical beauty, it is full of meaning and symbolism that I wanted to explore in a creative way. According to Chinese philosophy, the plant is capable of attracting good luck and longevity. I don't know if it's true, but if we believe it, we will certainly attract good energy. This Painting is inspired by traditional Portuguese gilded carving, widely used in religious art and in the decoration of royal palaces and the nobility, but here it has a more spiritual than religious character. Blue symbolizes water, sky and the spiritual world, as well as tranquility, serenity, balance and harmony. There is a connection to the symbolism of gold and blue, with the famous Portuguese expression “gold over blue”, that is, the perfect combination; and the meaning of colors, harmony of opposite and complementary colors.

Work represented in several National and International Collections. | ABOUT MY WORK My practice incorporates notions of identity and the self as creative source, appearing as a form of memoir and subjective experience. The vision of myself and my work is covered with many layers of misty images, capturing absence and presence of my body and mind, things are partially or mostly veiled and camouflaged by a skin or a mask. I collate a reservoir of symbolic references. A tactile space dominates, aiming past languages and past stories. The pieces have parallel versions of stories and histories petrified and perpetuated as emblems and symbols, that move through different timelines, I and the "other side of the mirror". | www.sofiacravoart.com (under construction) www.facebook.com/sofiacravoart
