About The Artwork

“LOVE LIES BLEEDING” Amaranthus/Love Lies Bleeding - is a flower centred around the meaning of compassion and sacrifice. From its Greek source, the name means 'unfading' and the pink and green blossom is associated with everlasting love. In ancient Greece, the Amaranth was the symbol of immortality as a sacred plant of compassionate awareness which had healing properties and was used to decorate images of gods and tombs. It is written that the flower enables the soul to encounter and to transmute pain and suffering and transcend consciousness. It has the herbal power to move beyond personal pain, suffering or mental anguish by finding larger, transpersonal meaning in such suffering. Orchid - is known for its delicate beauty and exotic character. It imparts a wide variety of messages, but historically the meanings of orchids included wealth, love and beauty. To this day they remain symbolic of rare and delicate beauty offering mystique, charm and delight. An orchid is a special, most evolved, captivating flower and its allure is a gift for the treasured person in your life. Their graceful appearance and elegance evoke a sense of refinement and draw immediate attention. Peony – is considered to be 'The King of Flowers' in Japan. Its symbolic meaning is good fortune, honour, daring and masculine bravery. It is respected for its strength. The history of Peony dates back thousands of years and mythology surrounding its origin has multiple versions. One legend has it that peony is named after Paeon, a physician to the gods. With their lush, full rounded blossom peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage. It is a traditional floral symbol of China and is a favourite flower in gardens all over the world serving as an inspiration for a variety of art forms. Daisy – is captured in this painting only by its petals which are playing 'Loves Me...Loves Me Not' as a moustache. Daisy's symbolism is associated with purity, loyal love, beauty, patience and simplicity. Devoid of any sin or guilt, daisy is a perfect symbol of innocence. It is often used while confessing undying love. Though the use of flowers of proposing love may be ancient, the daisy captures the language of love best with its silence. Hence why the petals are strategically placed around the mouth in this piece. Rose – conveys deep emotions, be it love, longing or desire. Red ones are often used to express passion, respect, admiration and devotion. 12 of them convey 'Be Mine' or 'I love you'. White ones stand for purity, chastity and innocence whilst being indicative of spirituality. Yellow ones are an expression of exuberance, feeling of joy, care and welcome and are more symbolic of a platonic friendship. Pink ones convey gentle emotions of gratitude, admiration and sweetness. Orange ones embody a fiery breeze and their bloom signifies passion and energy, also intense desire and fascination. I wanted to create such a bouquet all in one rose. Forget Me Not – flower signifies faithfulness and enduring love. They are an expression of sweet fond memories and hope. Their delicate tiny blossoms release an affectionate soft cry – 'Do not forget' the sunny and cloudy days of a deep relationship. Once you find true love this is the flower to give to your beloved. Ladybird is an omen of good luck but it is also a symbol of love. Asian traditions hold to the belief that if caught and then released, the Ladybird will faithfully fly to your true love and whisper your name in his/her ear. Upon hearing the Ladybird's message your true love will hurry his/her way to your side. Ancient farmers of the land have considered the Ladybird a good omen as she controls aphid populations. The number of spots on a Ladybird's back is said to indicate the number of months to pass before the wish for love comes true.

I peel the skin off my subjects. Not in a morbid or an anatomical way, but to explore the narratives within, and the complex personalities they represent. I use dense, psychologically charged imagery, expressed through bold colour. Each obsessive brush stroke takes me closer to a faithful interpretation. The process becomes an addiction, a dissection and a devoted study of their soul. My instrument is just a very tired, two-haired brush.
