About The Artwork

This is an abstract painting I created in my studio in Lowell, MA, in October 2017. I made this painting on unstretched, unprimed heavy weight canvas and stretched it around heavy duty, gallery depth stretcher bars after it was finished and dried. This results in the composition wrapping around the sides of the painting. My technique involves creating the composition in several overlapping layers. The very bottom layer is the raw canvas itself, which I leave showing through in places, most notably at the top of this painting where you can see areas of beige. I start out by doodling on the canvas with paint markers and then soaking the canvas with water before applying high flow acrylic, which soaks into the wet canvas for a died effect, creating nice gradients between colors. The next several layers alternate between drawing with paint makers, applying broad swatches of opaque heavy body acrylic with a silicone spatula type of tool, pouring mixtures of acrylic media and pigment, and dripping paint into wet media.
