About The Artwork

In this small 20 x 16 x 2.5" piece you find yourself on the stage in surreal setting. Everything is unexpected and strange. We feel ticklish because everything is recognizable, but nothing familiar. On the left side of the foreground we see raws of red numbered theater seats and on the right a green field. We are looking at a stage, bridge and a soccer field all at once. Funny but mysterious hot plate is frying an egg on itself next to a whistling tea kettle and a bunch of white insects are flying away from it into the dark night. A human head sits on the gras with bright ball behind it . Full moon? Apple? Soccer ball? Everything is possible in this world!

Moscow-born, both classically and conceptually trained, Alexandra Rozenman brings a canny and charming mysticism to her life and art. Rozenman came to America from Moscow, Russia as a political refugee at the end of the eighties. She creates her personal and often surreal world, where shapes, colors and images are often utilized like words in a story. Living in the Soviet Union Rozenman studied in Russia with today well-known dissident artists and was a part of Moscow alternative cultural scene of the 1980's. She holds Masters degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Beginning in 1989, her work has been represented nationally and internationally. In 2006 she was awarded a MacDowell Foundation Fellowship.
