Inspired from a visit to Shanghai, and experiencing first hand, a completely different approach to life. Most notably was their cultural approach to nature, stating that man's place was within it, opposed to the more western approach of controlling it. This is somewhat expressed in their gardens, a place of peaceful retreat intertwining traditional Pagodas with mountain stone, water and plant life, all symbolic to Chinese landscape. This is one of a series of three paintings, the titles further suggest the history of the trade industry the west shared with Shanghai (a major shipping city), and how it fell into chaos through corruption and control with the introduction of Opium, in exchange for precious goods. Premium British wet weave 13oz linen, mounted on sturdy solid board. Deep canvas bars allow the work to really hold a robust presence as a painted object, alongside hand ground oil paint which gives the painting its vividity.
