I have been interested in experimental pattern cutting for several years, and I regard it as 'fabric sculpture'. This was first kickstarted by seeing a book by Tomoko Nakamichi who was a pattern cutting professor at the Bunka School of Fashion in Tokyo, Japan. She devised many unusual shapes incorporated into 'toiles' - experimental test garments made of calico, and these were beautifully photographed and presented in her first book, which was the start of a series of five. I made several of these up, and went on to use the pattern cutting methods to devise my own designs which I then photographed to show the resulting shapes, lit from behind. I made this painting from one of those photographs which I had edited with Photoshop to bleach out a lot of the detail. Then with a bit of 'freestyle' detail, I put the painting together. The title, 'Japanese Triangle' refers to the fact that when the garment is laid flat, it can be seen that it is actually made from a triangle shape. This painting is slightly mysterious as to the setting, but I hope interesting enough to bear a lot of scrutiny!

I have always had a love of fabrics and clothing, and in my parallel life as a designer, pattern cutter & maker, the fashion drawing and illustration process has always been important. Painting portraits of wedding dresses and other clothing, came as a natural progression. I have always carried on my artwork alongside designing and making, and I’d had an itch to make oil pastel paintings of clothing for a couple of years, but work always got in the way. When the wedding dress painting idea came up, I began by using oil paint on canvas for a more voluptuous look. Clothing has always been very meaningful to me for many reasons, and with the portraits I wanted to project an ethereal atmosphere, with a dramatic, theatrical edge through photo editing as a starting point. Having always used marker pens for my design drawings, I decided to try them as an ‘ideas’ medium. The results are graphic and simple, on smooth Bristol board, with a fresh translucence, almost like a watercolour. I have catholic tastes, and this is reflected in my work.
