About The Artwork

Kiwi, Fig and Plane Trees. 30.4 x 22.3 cm. Gouache and watercolor on paper. Thea McPherson 2023. A lush, detailed painting of the artist's Danish garden in late summer showing the kiwi tree in the middle, the fig tree to the left, the plane tree in the background and the chestnut tree on the right just inside the frame. Gouache and watercolor were both used to great effect to show the light coming through the leaves and the thicker texture of the tree bark. Viewers will spend time noticing many intricate shapes and details. Wild pink roses contrast with the dark greens of the kiwi leaves and the deep purple of the ripe figs.

Thea McPherson is a professional artist living on a small island in Southern Denmark. She works primarily in watercolor and gouache on paper. Her subject matter focuses on the natural world, especially her garden and the landscapes around her. She enjoys looking for patterns in nature and painting the small details. Thea is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area in California and has lived all over the world. Most recently she spent time in sunny Portugal painting vibrant tropical and succulent plants. She now calls Denmark home and is working on bringing some of the loose expressiveness and experimentation with color that she found in Portugal to the very different Danish flora and color palette she sees around her. Thea's dreamy landscapes are meant to invoke joy and peace. She uses artmaking as a way to notice the beauty around her.
