La Farfalla As we set off from Sicily to Sardinia we stumbled upon the jewel of the Mediterranean. By this time we had seen a lot of idyllic spots and our breath was not easily taken away. Favignanna is the nearest of three Aegadian islands to West Silicly and is affectionately known as ‘La Farfalla’, or ‘The Butterfly’. Tuna fishing used to dominate these parts but has fallen way tourism. This was July and the place was heaving. Multitudes of small day boats rafter together but even this could not detract from the beauty of this spot. This large piece came together over six months, following our return to the UK. Measuring 110x110cm it is a significant part of the collection and represents the Halcyon days of the trip. We had come a long way and gained much experience but end of the trip was still far from our minds. The comfortable poses of the bathers reflect my inner calm felt at the time. While the subtle shifts in hue of the glisten rocks and water suspend the viewer in a meditative state which time can no longer erode.

Johnny Morant (b.1982) is a contemporary figurative painter. Working primarily in oil, his evolving process explores the deconstructive analysis of traditional themes. Born in Hong Kong, he moved to England and grew up in the South West. After attending art school in Bristol and Bournemouth he moved to London where his new surroundings had a strong impact on his work. In this densely populated urban setting Morant is steadily making a name for himself as an accomplished painter of the built environment and the people within it; "Playing on the border between clarity and suggestion my work prioritises the intuitive application of paint with an aim to capture the viscosity of light and insecurity of form." Morant has had three successful solo exhibitions at the Rountree Tryon Gallery in London and has work included in many collections including Smith & Williamson, Standard Chartered Bank, Prudential plc and Old Mutual plc. He currently lives and works in West London.
