About The Artwork

There are so many beautiful sites around Lake Lure ... the first I was drawn into was this boathouse right beside Lake Lure Park. I loved the way the light and shadow and water reflections made the colors change. Over a two hour period the side of the building was thrown into strong sunlight, but I kept the dappled shade from earlier. I used flat, chiseled brushstrokes layered over thin monochrome underpainting, using artist grade oils varnished with Gamsol. The substrate is oil primed linen gallery wrapped onto .67” wood frame with painted sides for frameless or shadowbox frame presentation. I hope my contemporary approach of rhythmic brush strokes and bright, thick impasto brush strokes and harmonious color will calm and stimulate, and that the lyrical, almost abstract realism provides a dense visual puzzle that continues to intrigue over time.

Painting "en plein air" landscapes in the many beautiful scenic and urban environments here around Asheville, North Carolina, I seek to create a mythology of place. Some have said my paintings have a life of their own. By layering on pure tints over a bright under painting, I try to recreate the prismatic effects of light. For me painting is a form of meditation; I go into a trance as my eye absorbs the beauty and my brain puzzles out how to paint it. Bright, colorful, impressionistic, modern, and semi-abstract, my paintings evoke a dreamy lyricism. I hope my contemporary approach using rhythmic brush strokes and bright, thick harmonious color will calm and stimulate. Part folk and part abstract, I hope my work provides the viewer with a peaceful experience of the natural world which continues to intrigue over time.
