Why do they swim against the flow to their death? What power draws them back each year to the same spot in the same river to spawn and die. Only a few survive. In Ireland they have always been considered the harbinger of knowledge. Against the gushing water the odds are against them. They are buffeted as they leap up towards the river's source. The salmon, believed in Irish mythology to have swum in the Well of Knowledge, imparted all the knowledge of the world to whoever ate it.
