About The Artwork

This is a painting I made in my studio in Lowell, MA in 2017. I start with a rectangle of loose, unprimed canvas and apply several layers of medium using a variety of techniques. I start with a doodle in sharpie marker, then soak the canvas with water in selective areas where I then apply low viscosity highly pigmented acrylic paint which acts like a dye, working its way into the fibers of the canvas and creating wash like gradients of color. Subsequent layers include more marker doodles, smears of heavy body acrylic, throwing and spraying paint, creating drips by selectively draping the canvas off the edge of my work table, and pouring clear acrylic medium and dripping low viscosity acrylic into the puddles of medium while it is still wet. The silvery areas in this painting are composed of clear medium with silver and pearl high flow acrylic dripped into it. These areas are raised slightly and the iridescent spots penetrate into the depth creating a three dimensional effect that shimmers as you view the painting from different angles. Once dry, I stretched the piece around a set of heavy duty stretcher bars giving the final painting a depth of 1.5 inches. The composition of the piece extends around the stretcher bars, so the sides are painted in the same fashion as the front.
