I was surrounded by the Mourne Mountains throughout my school days. My school house was named after Donard peak and another was named after Binion. As a teenager I spent some time with the Kitzmantel family in Austria. The parents had been ski champions. They took me into the mountains of the Salzkammergut near lake Toplitz. Memories of those experiences were important in my developing interest in the current debate on climate change and its effect on the environment. One of many books which influenced my interest in climate and landscape is Mark Lynas's book 'The God Species' How the Planet can Survive the Age of Humans. We are both creators and destroyers of life according to him. We can only hope to manage the planet if we understand how its various physical elements affect one another. When you go into mountains and experience the clean air they seem to act like the lungs of the world. I started painting in acrylic instead of oil because of the health of someone working close to me. I resented it to start with but I found that I could experiment with different techniques particularly using tape. My use of it is very apparent in their work. When I paint it is as if I am going on a journey through an unknown landscape because I allow the development of the work to lead me on.
