About The Artwork

“Mrs. Mildred” is a piece inspired by an extended stay out in the countryside of rural Utah, USA. As well as an ongoing exploration of yoga and meditation. Peacefully commuting in and out of town, one will notice the local animals grazing. My desire to capture the essence of this peacefulness led to a more surreal interpretation when applied to my wooden board. There is a smooth quality throughout the surface of the paint aside from the more heavily textured grass which possesses thicker and broader strokes. This mimics the texture of a field as seen from farther away. Oil paint has a wonderfully bright and bold presence to it. The colors will not dull over time and the thick strokes will maintain their juicy appearance. By gazing into the floral backdrop of this pleasantly demure horse the viewer will feel at ease. The balance of color and value provide a sense of wholeness throughout the piece as well as within the viewer as they enjoy the subtle vibration of close complimentary colors. The piece is an emotional experience. In choosing the simple subject matter the imagined space alludes to a somewhat lonely existence, somewhere between dream and reality. The juxtaposition of gentle contrast and pleasant tones sway the viewers feelings from what one would imagine from such an existence to a certain sense of clarity and acceptance. The painting provides a safe space to empathize with the vulnerability and perhaps naiveté of the small horse, without challenging the viewers own sense of self and vulnerability. "Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change."- Brené Brown
