Mythic Beast Print

This is one from a series paintings on hand stretched raw canvas. I like the way paint soaks into an unprimed canvas. I tend to use water based paints and inks for their quick drying time, lack of odor, and easy clean up. This composition came about intuitively. I was painting something else entirely and it was a bad painting, I hated it. Then I saw a form popping out so I blocked it out with white gesso. I then defined the form further and etched into the gesso here and there to reveal the under layers. I'm drawn to primitive renderings of human and animal forms. My painting influences include Huma Bhaba, Marlene Dumas, Don Van Vliet, Georg Baselitz, and Francis Bacon.
