About The Artwork

The pieces below are about the commodities market, the raw materials that they are, and their relation to the human spirit. I was inspired to paint about commodities when people were selling their gold jewelry for cash during the recent recession. I associate gold jewelry as family heirlooms…so I figured that the economic value of gold must be more than its sentimental value – and I thought what happens when the price of gold drops? Does one regret selling their jewelry? For these pieces I used simple colors that relate to each commodity and I kept the paintings simple and flat because I think raw materials are simple and mathematics, boring and flat. But it is emotion or the human spirit that brings it to life – and that is why I use faces in these paintings – to represent the human spirit as it relates to a commodity.
