About The Artwork

When I was a youngster, I used to roam and hunt quite a bit with my father out in Bedford County Virginia. These scenes are now becoming rare as this area is under intense development pressure. This painting is the first in a series I've done of "vanishing points" in Virginia. Places either gone, destroyed, lost to development, highway "improvement" or in danger of being lost. The scene depicts a German pointer working a field for quail or grouse which frequent the woods edge (or used to) in these areas. I used to love to watch the dogs work a field. The mountains in the background should be familiar to anyone who has lived in or visited Central Virginia near the mountains. The famous "Peaks Of Otter". There is a little homage to Andrew Wyeth in this piece. An element similar to a part of his early work Turkey Pond. The original is in my wife's collection and not currently for sale and was executed in egg tempera. I have been working primarily in Egg Tempera now for the last 2-3 years. Starting with the construction of my own hand made poplar panels coated and polished with up to 10 coats of marble dust rabbit hide glue gesso which are then polished to a piano key smooth finish. The entire process is so basic and primative. Making paint with egg yolk white wine and ground pigments. Many of them "found" pigments in my own region of VA which is rich in natural ochre deposits. I prefer a loose realism style of painting. Unlike a lot of egg tempera artists who use very tightly controlled small brush strokes. I start with large lose free scrubbles washes of transparent color, slowly building up a base that I then further and further refine with each layer. Most of my paintings have area's with upwards of 100 layers of color.
