About The Artwork

The main inspiration for one of my goals was a magnificent novel - auto- and city-‘s biography Istanbul: Memories and the City by famous writer Orhan Pamuk. For me, as an artist who arrives to Istanbul from the Balkans as the Turkish West, the most intriguing pages in Pamuk’s book deal with the question how artists from West represented in their works their fascination with the city. While many of them, e.g. Eugène Delacroix, Thomas Allom, William Henry Bartlett and Eugène Flandin, as Pamuk writes, looked primarily for oriental features of the city, presenting it as typical capital of the East, Antoine Ignace Melling - 18th century painter, architect and voyager during his 18 years long stay in Istanbul was not attracted to make a portrait of Istanbul as a fascinating and exotic city: in his engravings Melling depicted the town without prejudices, being mostly interested in making the portrait of its social life. This will be the starting point of my research, too.
