About The Artwork

In essence, this piece is based on "peace" in many languages, in the hope of peace in every land. Since I was born in the 1970s, I do not have personal memories of the struggles for civil rights or the war in Vietnam. Right now feels to me like the most difficult and hopeless time in my lifetime, both domestically and around the globe. And so painting becomes a surrogate for hope, its creation an act of hopefulness. My history with choral singing, a love of travel, and personal emotional explorations come to the fore. Well-trained choirs often since in many languages, and decades of choral singing reminds me both of the power of words and the universality of human aspirations. Traveling to different lands reminds me of the core warmth, generosity, and friendliness of humankind, and in spite of divisions between and within us, our future is shared. I am largely self-taught, and find myself manipulating the paint in ways I've not seen from Bob Ross or the one class I've taken. The upper left quadrant of the canvas has a large slash, coarsely sewn together with thick cotton crochet thread and coated with acrylic gesso, front and back, to preserve the longevity of the piece. I make this gesture as a personal interpretation of kintsugi, the Japanese practice of gilding the seams in reassembled broken pottery to honor the brokenness as part of the history of the object.

A native of San Antonio, I recently lived in San Francisco for 18 years and previously lived in New York and Paris. I am deeply committed to city culture both today and through the centuries, especially through the lenses of architecture, music, literature, history, and of course, art. While I appreciate abstraction and distilling to essences, I am more excited by the richness of complex layering and simultaneous meanings.
