About The Artwork

The media I am currently working in is encaustic collage. Encaustic is an ancient process using heat and wax. Biblical themes, ideas, and accounts are laced throughout my work and remain a spring board and compass to understanding and interpreting the content. Repetition is also an important element, as it reflects how we learn and experience life. The subjects in the images reflect ideas and thoughts common to all, life, death, birth, time, work, celebration and conflicts, internal and external. I look at my work as a thought provoking search of ideas and experiences sealed in a “skin” of wax. I begin my work by making a matrix that can be reused, as with printmaking. I typically start with rubbings from one or more sources, and embellish that work with a variety of mediums, watercolor, pencil, charcoal, crayon, pastel. I then apply wax, sealing the image. It can be adhered to a support, or left as a work on paper. I then continue to embellish the work with collage cutouts and encaustic paint to further the repetition, composition and statement. I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area, and living in Boise, Idaho for the past 30 years. I have attended numerous colleges, including San Francisco Art Institute and Rhode Island School of Design, primarily studying printmaking. I have spent years as a docent at the Boise Art Museum and have loved learning about art I have not known before as well as sharing it with others .I am currently teaching elementary art and have been for the past 10 years. Its great fun and the best job I’ve ever had. I have continued to make art and seek out art throughout my lifetime. I am also a Christian and biblical themes trend throughout my work. I fell into encaustics, seeking a less expensive way to present my images, and have really grown to love it. Some works are on paper, some on wood, but almost all have elements of collage and image layering.
