This painting took me an inordinately long time to complete. I began painting it in early 2023, went away for several weeks in-between, moved house, and then eventually finished it. The background is painted in my favorite ultramarine blue, a shade of the blue used on Frida Kahlo's magnificent house and that later popularized by Yves Klein. Three massive orange pincushion proteas are the focal point of the painting, perhaps my favorite flower from back home in South Africa. I buy these every time I see them as they look like little sea creatures and feel comfortingly like childhood. The proteas are surrounded by lovely striped leaves and glorious red brush or feather shaped blooms. The vase of flowers is rather clearly inspired by Vicky Lindo's gorgeous ceramic work, which I have long dreamed of buying. Two lions populate the indigo blue and white vase, glaring at each other beneath a banner that reads "To what end. To what end" and backed by radiant lines. The tablecloth beneath the vase features thick, curving, bright yellow painted stripes beneath crayon fish and star or sunbursts in black on white. The painting has a lovely graphic feel and I was rather pleased when I finally completed it. It is painted on an 18x24 inch cradled board without a frame, in portrait orientation. The board has nude pale birch sides which are about 7/8 inch deep and can be hung as is or framed. It will ship from my little studio in San Leandro, California, wrapped in glassine and bubbles and cradled in a box.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
