Subject: Fortress Cerro Santa Lucia, Santiago, Chile Description: The painting captures the Gatehouse at Cerro Santa Lucia, designed by Manuel Olaguer Feliú in 1816. Built from stone quarried from the hill itself, the Gatehouse stands as a symbol of humanity's ability to shape and utilize the landscape for our own purposes. In the foreground, the lush and verdant natural landscape of the hill is depicted in stark contrast to the dense urban environment of the background, emphasizing the tension between the two. The Gatehouse serves as a barrier, holding back the encroaching urbanity and protecting the oasis of the hill. The painting encourages viewers to consider the impact of human development on the natural world and to appreciate the beauty of the landscape that surrounds us. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
