Porthole Patterns (w/ Pelican) Print

On a residency near the ocean, after dreaming of a massive ocean liner cruising through a far part of the sea and portholes with purple curtains, I made a rough sketch of a ship on plain white canvas. Then I started to collect blue. Blue plastic, blue paper, blue anything I could find. I begin adding all the blue things I picked up each day, and one day a bird appeared, and then transformed into an upside down pelican. As the waves built in dimension, and the ship started to become solid, the piece didn't feel quite... well, finished. It sat for a month or so, then at a family Christmas, my cousin received a Hatchimal, and as soon as that little stuffed animal baby popped out I knew the left behind cracked egg was what would complete the work. After, looking back on the work, I realized that my original intention to capture the feeling of the dream - one of jaunty good cheer, but also of a sort of forlorn-ness (ship moving away), wistfulness, and that slight confusion we all carry throughout life - shone through. _________ Part of the 'Structure' series
