QUARTZ : She embodies, femininity, softness & grace. My inspiration initially came while exploring the expansive minerals collection at The Yale Peabody Museum. I was moved by the incredible beauty and diversity of color, texture and elemental characteristics. As I further developed the concept of defining one’s innermost self through the physical and natural : It became apparent that this inspiration would be a natural fit. So much of how we express ourselves as women is shown through our hair. How we choose to style ourselves can be a defining physical characteristic, as well as powerful to us - in an emotional sense. By creating an almost crown-like composition on the head - I hoped to express these ideas of inner being and feminine regality. The mineral compositions explored this theme using the geological elements I had been inspired by at the Peabody and the opaqueness of acrylic paint. The exciting hues, textures and crystalline structures can be translated into passion, personality & certain characteristics such as strength, determination and ambition! These works examined the crux of femininity and power : the delicate features of the face juxtaposed with the structure and geometric lines of the crystals - all while blending the two very different elements into one. As a final element to these works, I add a layer of marks and flourishes. These were done automatically without any planning - finalizing a sense of energy and balance I had felt while diving into the inner core of these women.
