About The Artwork

“Riles” is a mixed media modular work that explores the state of inequality in the Philippines and how it affects me as a Christian artist. The painting depicts some of the railroad people that my friend and I photographed during a recent walk on the side of the PNR rails near Santa Ana Manila. The whole painting is composed of 5 acrylic on canvas pieces with different depths to emphasize the displacement that these people experience on a day-to-day basis because of the lack of their own land. The other works are in pen & ink, color pencil, oil pastel and watercolor on paper. One of my aims for this piece was to give dignity to the lower class and personally looking at the state of the disenfranchised Filipinos, it puts things in perspective that I am still fortunate to have been born into a hardworking middle-class family. I also want to challenge the audience to look at the reasons why such inequality exists in the Philippines : Is it because of corruption? Capitalism? Apathy or something else? As a Christian artist, is there anything I can do about this disparity?
