This painting is about movement. The studies for the painting were done on a hot, late summer’s day. I did several watercolor sketches to get a sense of the quality and character of the scene. I was seeking to capture the nature of the rushing water as it roared around the rocks and then quietly poured into the foreground. There was a richness of the contrast of the warm green trees against the very cool, somewhat mysterious darks under the trees. The cool dark at the bottom of the trees moves us along with the water at a relaxed angle from the right of the painting downward toward the mid left of the painting. It helps our eyes move with the rushing water. The rocks stand somewhat stoically against the dramatic movement of the river. I love the complexity and activity of foliage against the dramatic simplicity of the warm blue sky. The movement and activity of the painting remind me of the bustle of contemporary life. It helps me to seek refuge in the quiet waters. I want the viewer to have a sense of tranquility when they observe the artwork. This painting is pastel on Kitty Wallis paper and it is priced without a frame.
