About The Artwork

“ I couldn't say that art will solve everything; it won't solve anything. But there has to be a kind of amalgamation of everybody all looking in the same direction. First, you have to convince people that climate change is happening, second, what we can do about it and, finally, how long have we got? ” Max Eastley Clarksons recent paintings intertwine the natural world with the nature of paint. These paintings offer the viewer a chance to immerse themselves into an unfamiliar place of wonder and fascination, whilst presenting a moment to pause and be inspired by the reality of our beautiful yet fragile 'One Planet' . Beneath the painted aesthetics, Clarksons practice echo's a sombre tone towards the shifting states of our planet, and how the cost of human intervention is impacting the natural balance of each ecosystem and the flora and fauna within it. “ As the spirit wains the form appears ” Each painting begins as a response to something; an experience of a space or research into a place. Then into the act of painting; a dialogue occurs allowing the material to inform the outcome. This is something further to explore, breaking boundaries and playing with the level of information, allowing invention to proceed where the subject matter departs. Failure is still an outcome. Inspiration comes from many sources, from reading about the contemporary sublime to looking at hybrid painting or more historical references like the Northern Romantics. Ideas come from responding to first-hand experience, documentaries, film, magazines, modern science journals and most importantly, music informs everything and paint itself is fascinating; these all inform and structure the painting discourse.
