About The Artwork

this was inspired by my trip to Agua Azul in Chiapas, Mexico. It's a very special place, it's a cascade of water, of the color of all shades of turquoise. but i realized that inspiration only after the painting was finished. initially, i started loosely juxtaposing deep scarlet red and tender mint and really dug the contrast of opposing colors and opacities. i liked how cool the painting felt in the lower part while raging sun heated up the top. my feeling is that this painting is heating up the room while at the same time infusing serenity into it.

I was born and spent the first 20 years of my life in my native Belarus. I'm a self-taught artist. I resonate with the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Cy Twombly, or my country man Marc Chagall. Color and its exploration are some of the main driving forces of my work. The shapes and the dynamic created by the flowing paint fascinate me. Rather than fight the crooked line, I embrace it and build on it. Pouring, splashing, dripping, rolling, mark-making help me create the languid, biomorphic dancing shapes, while also leaving almost no trace of me touching the canvas. With my work, I hope to immerse the viewer into a sense of mystery, wonder, fun, and maybe a little contemplation. My process is highly intuitive and physical, and it's moved forward by the emerging image itself as I react to it. I work out of my studio in Sacramento, California. www.stellakisstiger.com
