About The Artwork

Selengei is a town in Kenya in the Rift Valley region with a population of under 1000. This is also the abode of Kenya’s Maasai tribe which has become an icon for the richness and diversity of our country’s culture, a people whose traditions, beliefs and routines have changed little since the dawn of our history. The Maasai live in Kraals arranged in a circular fashion. The fence around the kraal is made of acacia thorns, which prevent lions from attacking the cattle. Warriors, or all the young men in the community, are in charge of protecting livestock from predators and enemies, and, these days, of taking cattle to far away pastures during the dry season. 'Selengei' is a painting about 2 warriors who are sitting on a large rock in the wilderness, protecting their heritage and their cattle. The painting has a 5 inch white mount all around giving it an illusion that the warriors are staring into vastness. It is framed with 4 pieces of 3inch wide, heavy cyprus wood with knots which was naturally dried over a year, the bark peeling off on its own. Selengei needs to be displayed in a large room for full impact.

Shaila Darr was born in Nairobi, Kenya, where she grew up and blossomed as an artist. A child prodigy, Shaila manifested her precocious talent at the age of 13, when she began sketching beautifully rendered images in pencil. She progressed to experimenting with pen and ink, creating vivid portraits using the dotting technique. Shaila opted to take graphic design as her profession and has worked successfully in leading advertising agencies as a graphic designer and art director, winning awards and accolade. Her passion for painting resurfaced and even though untutored in fine art, she went on to master her own unique style and artistic discipline despite a busy career in advertising. In 2001 she established her own freelance art studio where she pursues her passion for painting. She has produced amazing works of art, depicting people in their environments. Her first collection of paintings is based on her trip to India and Nepal. Her visualization of innocent young girls with sad knowing eyes are mesmerizing and represent her strong views against child marriage and the stigmatization of women. She is also fascinated by The Maasai of Kenya and has captured the essence of the tribe in the unique individual style of her own.
