September is a beautiful month in Indiana. The sun is warm on one's skin without being too hot. I was sitting in the warm September sun as I painted the watercolor sketch that I would later develop into the painting displayed here. It depicts a scene on the grounds of the T. C. Steele State Historic Site, that is, the studio and home of Indiana painter T. C. Steele (1847-1926), including surrounding gardens and woodland.

I often find inspiration in the outdoors, painting and drawing en plain air. Before I settle on a place and subject, I always have to roam about for some time, "shopping" for a scene that I find particularly compelling. A major component of my process is physicality, which includes experiencing a place through multiple senses. The smell of freshly cut grass and the feel of the sun's warmth on my skin, for example, can affect me powerfully. I try to paint my experience, including my emotions and non-visual sensations.
